General purpose desktops [ii]

• What's missing

  • Currently, no good project management software available that I know of.
  • Currently, no commercial quality CAD software available that I know of.

• Reasons to use Linux on the desktop

  • Better reliability vs. MS Windows 95, 98, NT, Commercial UNIX
    • May yield lower support costs
  • Better security vs. MS Windows 95, 98

  Not compelling for most organisations at this time.

The idea that free software is more reliable than commercially produced software is counter-intuitive for a lot of people, but independent research shows that it is the case. This paper provides some concrete measurements; This paper talks about why.
