Types of database systems

• SQL is the language of Relational databases; other database models include

  • Hierarchical databases
  • Object-Oriented databases

  Been around a long time, and have their merits, but none has been so generally useful as the Relational model.

• Most database systems are relational database systems
• Most relational database management systems (RDBMS) understand SQL
• Most, unfortunately, also include proprietary extensions.
